I love including my little guy in the process of making baby food purees for his GoFreshBaby reusable food pouch. I can no longer shop at markets that don’t have a pint sized shopping cart for him, because he enjoys it so much (or throws a complete temper tantrum in the middle of the store, which, who am I kidding, I don’t want to deal with). He does love to fill up his cart with lots of fruits and veggies (and, of course, Cookie Monster waffles).
I told him to pick out one of the leafy vegetables and, as always, he went to the one that stood out. Purple Kale. I have never worked with kale before, but I thought “why not?!”. It is a superfood and I have been wanting to try it because of all of the good things I have heard about it. Before Reese grabbed the purple kale, I asked if we could switch to green and he said yes : )
Some of my friends love kale, so I knew it was similar to spinach in taste. I decided to grab a sweet potato to pair it with. I peeled the sweet potato and diced it into medium sized chunks, then I washed the kale and pulled the leaves from the stem (it seemed a little tough). I threw it all into a pot and steamed it for 20 minutes.
When it was done I transferred it to a bowl and began the purée process. I started with more kale than sweet potato, because I know how quickly a sweet potato can overpower a blend. I was surprised that i actually ended up using all of the sweet potato and green kale though. I always add water to get the purée to the consistency I like for the GoFreshBaby reusable baby food pouch.
The purée turned out delicious! I put it into some ice trays so that I can easily pop it into a GoFreshBaby reusable baby food pouch and be on my way with a vitamin and mineral packed snack in seconds!
